Shannon Watkins grew up in Southern California where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Linguistics from UCLA. Inspired by figures such as William F. Buckley Jr., Justice Antonin Scalia, and Thomas Sowell, Watkins became interested in public policy and political theory. She pursued these interests and now works at the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal where she writes on higher education policy. Watkins is an alumna of America’s Future Foundation’s Writing Fellows Program and the State Policy Network’s Generation Liberty Fellowship. Watkins lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina with her husband.
